Mariana Enriquez and the horror that is not just fiction

Mariana Enriquez: a voice that shakes up contemporary literature

Mariana Enriquez has become one of the most striking authors in contemporary Spanish-language literature. Her dark style, her visceral narrative and her approach to horror from the everyday have conquered readers all over the world. With a work that moves between the macabre and the crude social reality, Enriquez has been compared to great exponents of the genre such as Stephen King and Shirley Jackson.

Mariana Enriquez's trajectory: from journalist to literary reference

Born in Buenos Aires in 1973, Mariana Enriquez grew up in an Argentina marked by military dictatorship and economic crisis. From a young age she developed an interest in horror literature and dark narrative, influenced by authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft and Horacio Quiroga. She studied Social Communication at the National University of La Plata, where she began to develop her critical style and her interest in journalism.

Her career in cultural journalism led her to collaborate in various publications, most notably in the supplement Radar of the newspaper Page/12, where he has worked for decades. During this time, he devoted himself to writing chronicles, articles and essays on literature, cinema and politics, establishing himself as one of the most important voices of Argentine cultural journalism.

His foray into literature began at an early age with the publication of his first novel, Going down is the worst (1995), a story of transgressive youth that explores rebellion, drugs and generational disenchantment. However, it was not until the publication of his collections of short stories and horror novels that Enriquez achieved international recognition and positioned himself as a key figure in the renewal of the horror genre in Latin America.

Mariana's narrative style: horror, realism and social denunciation.

Author Mariana Enriquez

What distinguishes Mariana Enriquez from other horror writers is her ability to blend the supernatural with the harshness of everyday reality. Her stories are steeped in violence, disappearances, poverty, dictatorships and collective traumas. Far from focusing on traditional monsters or ghosts, Enriquez explores the fear that arises from injustice, marginality and the darkest aspects of the human condition.

Among its recurrent themes are:

  • Everyday horror: Their stories depict the terrifying in everyday life, from abused children to missing women and the structural violence that permeates society.
  • Gender-based violence: Enriquez tackles feminicide, abuse and patriarchal oppression with a critical and gritty eye. Her literature is a reflection of women's real fears and the brutality to which they are exposed.
  •
  • The political and social context: The Argentinean dictatorship and its aftermath appear frequently in his work, bringing a historical dimension to the terror. Historical memory and collective trauma form a fundamental part of his narrative.

  • The body and the grotesque: In his stories, the body becomes a space of horror and transformation. Mutations, mutilations and deformities are a constant in his literary imagery.

His most emblematic works and their impact

The things we lost in the fire (2016)

This collection of short stories established Enriquez as a master of modern horror. Over the course of twelve disturbing tales, the author explores gender violence, marginality and the supernatural with intense, gritty prose. Stories such as «The Dirty Boy» and «Orange Red Green» explore the horrors of childhood and madness with shocking rawness. The things we lost in the fire has been translated into several languages and has been praised by international critics.

Our part at night (2019)

Winner of the Herralde Novel Prize, this work is considered his masterpiece. In its almost 700 pages, Enriquez tells the story of a father and son on the run from an esoteric organisation that practises dark rituals in Argentina. The novel fuses gothic horror, dictatorship, black magic and political oppression, creating an atmosphere of anguish and despair. Its complex narrative structure and the depth of its characters have made it a benchmark in contemporary literature.

The danger of being sane (2022)

In this essay, Enriquez analyses the relationship between creativity and madness in literature. Through a journey through the history of literature and psychiatry, the author explores the mental health of iconic writers such as Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath and Alejandra Pizarnik, and how their emotional instability influenced their work.

Mariana Enriquez and her impact on horror literature

Mariana Enriquez's work has redefined horror in Latin American literature. Her social and psychological approach to fear has influenced new writers and has opened up a space for a horror with its own identity. Her literature is a reflection of the contemporary world, where the real horrors are not ghosts, but structural violence and inequality.

Her work has been translated into numerous languages and has received international critical acclaim. She has been compared to authors such as Stephen King, Clive Barker and Shirley Jackson, but her style and subject matter make her a unique voice in the genre.
